Indoor Park Petition

Published January 16, 2008 at 20:22
This is a formal petition requesting immediate action for the creation of an indoor Bike/Skateboard facility in Surrey, B.C.

As we all know, Surrey is a wet community. During this weather, the extreme sports community of Surrey has nothing to do except sit around playing video games and becoming overweight. With the 2010 Olympics in mind, we should make it a goal to promote overall health. If ridden during poor weather, bike jumps get damaged and skate parks are slippery and dangerous, resulting in injury and possible liability. An indoor facility will help prevent damage and keep people away from the slick parks, costing the city less money; it will also promote healthy living over the winter by giving people a safe place to ride and have fun.

Currently, the closest indoor facility is in Whistler; it doesn't operate during the winter and it is only for bikes. People from across the Lower Mainland will come to Surrey and pay to get in, boosting economy. The site will provide jobs and help the tourism industry.

In controlled facilities, liability is easy to deal with. Everybody who pays will have to sign a waiver. Whistler Air Dome and Mountain Bike Park have operated for years using this system.

This indoor facility could include features such as dirt jumps, skate park style and a foam pit. It would be open to the public. Park designing would be done by mountain bike riders. People from across the world could come to ride in the best indoor park, Surrey, B.C.

We hope that in reading this, you will sign and help us amplify Surrey's reputation amongst the extreme sports community and add to the excellent parks that we already have.
